Snow Leopard Provisional Support

Date: August 27, 2009

To: Departmental IT Liaisons, Department Heads, Deans/Directors

From: Information Technology Center

Subject: Six month Provisional Support Period for Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard

If you or your department are planning to buy a new Macintosh system or upgrade to Snow Leopard in the near future, please be advised that the
Information Technology Center (ITC) will be providing provisional support for Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard) from August 28, 2009 to February 28, 2010.

Provisional support means that the Technical Desktop Support Office
Staff and the Departmental Support Liaison may be updating the operating system configuration frequently as needed.  Additionally, due to new features and unknown software compatibility issues, we may need additional time to resolve problems that arise.  In some cases, there may be no resolution until software vendors update their software accordingly.  Beginning February 29, 2010, Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard will become part of the officially supported software for campus desktop computers.

The reason for having this provisional support period is because we are still in the process of optimizing the HCC standard configuration according to industry best practices.  There is some delay as we wait for software vendors to make necessary updates for compatibility.

Options:
1. Buy Mac OS 10.5 Leopard and enjoy stable desktop support.  Since new systems are automatically being shipped with Snow Leopard, please consult TDS (x333) for how to purchase Leopard software.
2. Buy Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard and accept provisional support until February 28, 2010.
3. Delay installation of new Mac systems running Snow Leopard until February 29, 2010.

If you have any questions, please address them to Rose Sumajit (x291).

Sincerely,

Connie Balanay
